New Norcia : Saturday 3 Jan.

This is a tourist town of course and so that means some things are designed to keep tourists at bay. The gallery and museum is $10 entry per adult. There is a daily walking tour of the whole town that takes place at 1.30pm everyday from the visitors centre (costing $23). There is mostly wheelchair access for those that need it. Lots of the buildings will be out of bounds unless you’re on a tour – which is not much use to artists anyway.

Later in the day there is an event :

New Norcia’s 16th Annual Ecumenical Ceremony
3rd January 2009

You are warmly invited to the Benedictine Community of New Norcia’s 16th Annual Ecumenical Ceremony with Carols, featuring the Georgian Singers, conducted by John Beaverstock. The Ceremony will take place at 5.00pm. Afternoon tea will be served before the ceremony in the Monastery Parlour (right of the main gate) from 3.00pm.
Why not enjoy a Sunday drive up to our beautiful and unique community to help us celebrate Christmas.

To register your attendance please contact the Communications and Events Manager on 9654 8371 or
I heard this choir  at a carols event on the 21st and they were very good. They could provide an interesting sketching experience for us.

Location & Meeting time: 2pm Saturday 3 Jan opposite the entrance to the Saint Gertrude’s College which has the museum and art gallery behind it. It’s on the main road. The google streetview above is at that location. Call 0410216074 if your lost. I might be lost too though.

Suggested to bring along: A hat, sun glasses for the sun set, sun cream, drinking water, light easel and materials. You might also want to bring a small sketchbook for drawing discreetly in the service with the choir etc at 5pm.

Now I’ve seen New Norcia and I don’t need to see it again. It was very hot and my paint dried before I could apply it to the board. The art gallery was interesting to visit.
